As before, great scenery and good corners ruined by poor surface. I pulled in to a surface layby for a photo, put my foot down but the dip I didnt see meant I just rolled over, grr
This has no place on BestBikingRoads. WorstBikingRoadsThat CouldEasilyKillYou? - thats more like it. Lets get the bad stuff out of the way first. The surface is really really bad, the stones that line the edge of the road are only there as perches for vultures looking for corpses below - and they are very well fed lol. The good stuff. Bloody loved it! Scared me shitless but I bloody loved it. Biggest drops off the side of a road that ive seen. Fantastic mountains, wonderful views, great fun, but quite possibly the scariest road ive ridden and definetely not one to race along unless you really grow a pair. The pictures really dont do it justice. If youre riding this and passing a camper coming the other way your stomach really turns over when you glance over the edge. Theres a cafe at the top at 1700 ish meters after a flatter, safer, climb. The highlight is the stretch carved out of the side of the mountain, but its well capable of killing the disrepectful. Happy days. Enjoy the pics.
Just a correction. Col d'Aubisque is a little farther from Gourette in the way up to Arrens-Marsous. I did this route this year. The scenery is outstanding but the road surface is the worst that i have ever driven. It was raining and the road was slippery too.
quite challenging, fantastic scenery, done it so many times now, in fact did it last week in the pitch black, just for the fun of it! crazy yes! but i live for the Pyrenees! and the 'col de biscuits' is my favoutite place....!" "take me home country roads"
Rises nicely on a good, wide surface with nice corners and stunning views. After Gourette the road continues rising but the surface deteriorates so it's not as nice to ride.
The poor surface that caused my rollover : -(
