An add on to the above review, please take it easy through the charming hamlet of Goongerah, my home town. If we get it together to set a cafe up @ the local Hall down the track, do stop in for a chat...
Great news is that the final 12kms of the legendary Bonang Road/Highway in Far East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia is going to be finally sealed within the next 12 months, making this a must ride route between Bombala and Orbost, especially travelling to MotoGP & WSBK on Phillip Island! Stay alert and keep you head on your side of the road, especially in blind corners, of which there are many. This is an amazing 100km's of twisty heaven through the forest, but always respect the Bonang folks, for it's also a potentially very dangerous piece of twisty tarmac. Not for the faint-hearted. No fuel between Orbost and Delegate, and keep alert for log trucks, though they're fortunately thin on the ground these days...
I call this the Orbost-Delegate Rd generally as Delegate is the last pub if you are travelling south. Ride in either direction and it is fantastic. I recommend riding this at the start of your day as you need to be fresh to really appreciate it, very technical if you go at your limits. The last pub at the north end is in Delegate, very basic accommodation available there in the pub, lovely people. Orbost has camp grounds and a couple of pubs so choices to be had. The road is gradually being sealed all the way, in late 2017 there was only about 30kms of gravel in the middle. At the north end there were road works so that is being worked on now. Watch out for fallen branches and bark on the road, if wet then take care as it is mostly forest so surface will stay damp. Not a lot of traffic but wildlife are a hazard. Narrow and very windy but some good stretches of corners you can see through for 100m or so. Sign post says 105kms of corners - believe it and enjoy.
This is a great bit of road. The signs warn of 105kms of corners and they aren’t exaggerating. The speed signposting for corners is either totally wrong or non existent, so don’t trust them. The road surface is mostly good but with some small corrugations and dips. Probably the biggest hazard is the wildlife. I just missed a cactus wombat on the exit of a blind corner. Also had to avoid wallabies on two occassions. The road north of Bonang turns to dirt, but the surface is generlly good. I dod this road from Orbost through to Edenin one day,
The excellent Bonang Highway, signposts warn of over 100kms of curves! That about says it all really. A real gem.
