An East Bay favorite. Narrow, no center line, most turns are blind. Loads of bicyclists. Still, lots of fun since the road keeps you on your toes and makes your riding sharper. Nice scenery, and occasionally spectacular wildlife. We saw a nest pair of bald eagles yesterday with two chicks!
One poster said the road is clean, and it is - mostly. Always assume Calaveras is dirty. If it has rained recently it will certainly be dirty.
Felter Road and Alpine road are close by on the south end of Calaveras, and Palomares Road is a few miles away on the north end. You can make a great loop if you include Mt. Hamilton as well.
Tight hairpins and blind corners. Road isn't divided. Which leaves me scared of hitting some stoned hippie swinging wide around a turn head on. Road is free of debris and gravel, so if you're brave enough to stick those blind turns, it could be a lot of fun. But you probably won't get out of 3rd until the straights. A few spots to pull off for a bitchin view of the lake. Even saw some wild turkeys!
