My wife and I summited Mt. Evans today for the first time in several years. Do not miss this ride! The ride from Idaho Springs to Echo Lake is OK, but the good stuff starts once you enter the park. Once you climb above tree line you will want to resist checking out the views to your right: some of the drop offs (no guard rails) are at least 1000 feet. Also, remind yourself to breathe deeply. The air gets really thin, especially if you are not accustomed to riding at altitude. One section of road a couple of thousand feet from the summit is in bad shape: potholes, humps, and heaves require navigating this section in 1st gear. There are quite a few extremely tight hairpin turns. Keep your head on a swivel. The views from the summit are incredible. In mid-July it can be in the 30's without wind chill, so dress warm. Make sure to bring your rain suit, as showers can pop up at any time.
DecimusSuch a great road to ride...until your clutch loses pressure at altitude :(
sassageRoad is closed seasonally and is a toll when open but wow!
Lots of curves and spectacular drop offs, great ride.
