Enjoyed the ride, did it in the evening, would be better during the day, more so in summer when you can worry less about leaf litter, mud and puddles.
Quite scenic, also added my own bit heading back to Newmarket via Haverhill.
Road would suit an off road or on/off road bike much better than my own vfr400 :)
done this route a few weeks a go on the way from work @ newmarket but added a bit extra go on towards the HMP then follow on to finchingfield - weathersfield - braintree fun fun see other routes for details to them
BertFrom the central roundabout in Newmarket go East along Old Station Road and then turn left at the Ashley Road T junction. You are then on the B1083. This goes through hilly country, with enough straights to give you time to notice the scenery but principally a succession of moderately tight, but not extreme, bends. The mix of straights and bends is unusually good, and this is a well-liked road by riders of all standards. Go through Ashley Green, Lidgate and Wickhambrook (where there is a biker-friendly pub - The Greyhound - unfortunately just off this route) until you come to the A143. Turn right onto this towards Haverhill and almost immediately find the Hard Times Cafe (very popular with bikers) on your right.
