Barnard Castle is a nice old town with the remains of a stronghold situated on a cliff above the River Tees. This road passes through a stonewalled landscape and across moorland. Further north at Hexham is a Saxon crypt and Englands oldest purpose-built prison now houses the Border History Museum.
A pleasant stonewalled landscape with some interesting corners leading into Stanhope.
